MECHANICA
"Order through ingenuity, no matter the cost."
An Empire of Machines
On the industrial world of Caldra, Mechanica has built an empire around a simple belief: magic is engineering. Runes are circuits, crystals are generators, and alchemy is chemistry. Nothing is unknowable, only unstudied.
That philosophy led to the creation of the Golden Engine, a reactor that gathers and condenses Caldra’s naturally occurring arcane energy into usable power. This power is Luminance. The city of Ironhold grew around it, eventually overshadowing Mechanica’s original capital of Brasswick to become the center of their empire.
Luminance is distributed from Ironhold’s reactor across the Wellspring network to three auxiliary reactors, each controlled by one of Caldra’s four engineering guilds. Together, they form the Iron Assembly which has ruled Mechanica for generations. Brasswick’s traditionalist engineers resent their former capital’s decline, creating a century-old rivalry that the appearance of the Nexus threatens to reignite.
The Automaton Legions
Luminance is more than energy; it is life itself.
Clockwork drones are self-contained autonomous machines. Sophisticated, but ultimately just tools. Luminant automata are different. Inert until charged by a Luminance reactor, they awaken and are able to learn, adapt, and respond in ways that are sometimes unsettlingly close to consciousness.
Rumors claim some of the Luminent have become genuinely sentient only to be classified as property by the guilds. An underground network of liberated Luminants and sympathetic engineers dubbed The Lumenguard seeks to expose the truth. The Iron Assembly denies that true machine consciousness exists.
The Ashfall Breach
At the Ashfall guild's reactor, an anomaly appeared. Experiments on the Breach produced impossible results: machinery emerged that no one had designed, power surges exceeded every known limit, and failures cascaded across Ironhold's entire grid.
For the first time, Mechanica encountered something they could not understand. Researchers now believe the Breach may provide access to power beyond even Luminance, but may also reveal that their fundamental assumptions about reality have never been more wrong.
Varris Kane
Varris was once a compassionate senior engineer of the Emberlight guild, devoting himself to making Caldra safer through better design.
When the Ashfall Breach opened on top of him during his research on Luminants, Varris was nearly destroyed by it. He barely survived by ripping the drone’s Luminance core from its reactor line and implanting it into his own chest. The surging energy destroyed his biological body, forcing him to replace much of himself with metal.
Varris became more man than machine, something caught between biological human and mechanized Luminant, kept alive by the same force that animates the machines he once studied.
The Breach unknowingly Imprinted the Nexus on him. He now perceives undetectable energy and glimpses impossible futures. His visions have left him questioning whether prediction gives him the right to prevent events before others can choose their own paths.
Despite his experience and the Lumenguard's cause, Varris has remained publicly silent about machine sentience. Instead, he has begun work on his greatest invention: the Continuum, an apparatus designed to permanently seal the Rifts and cut the Nexus off from Mechanica, and anything else.
His reasoning is simple — If something is too dangerous to control, it must be made inaccessible.
Whether that conviction is compassion or the cold logic of inevitability is a question Varris has not found an answer to. It may be the only problem he has ever been afraid to solve.
