A Metropolis of Machinery

On the industrial world of Caldra, Mechanica has built an empire around a simple belief: nothing is unknowable, only unstudied. Magic is engineering. Runes are circuits. Alchemy is chemistry.

That philosophy led to the creation of the Golden Engine, a reactor that gathers and condenses Caldra's naturally occurring arcane energy into usable power known as Luminance. The city of Ironhold grew around it, eventually overshadowing Mechanica's original capital of Brasswick as the center of their civilization.

Luminance flows into Ironhold and is distributed through the Wellspring network to three additional auxiliary reactors, each controlled by one of Caldra's four great engineering guilds. Together, these guilds form the Iron Assembly which has ruled Ironhold for generations. Their governance has transformed Caldra into an industrial wonder, but old rivalries die hard. Brasswick’s traditionalist engineers resent their former capital’s decline, creating a century-old contention that the appearance of the Nexus threatens to reignite.

Mechanica's mastery of Luminance has produced machines capable of far more than simple automation. Its most advanced creations can learn, adapt, and respond with an intelligence approaching consciousness, though the Iron Assembly insists they remain nothing more than puppetry.

The Convergence brought something to Mechanica that it cannot simply engineer away. The emergence of the Rifts have produced phenomena that defy established principles, challenging the basic foundation upon which their entire civilization was built.

For the first time, Mechanica faces a question it cannot answer through science: what happens when reality itself refuses to follow the rules?
